There are records of a ship called the Mary James that was certainly trading between Bristol and Europe, usually Spain and Portugal, between 1541 and 1550. The ship was actually jointly owned by three Bristol merchants; William Carey, Robert Leighton and John Pryn. It was an average size merchant ship that could hold a cargo of 105 tons of wine. The Matthew (left) was about half the size of the Mary James. In August 1545 the Mary James was involved in the second naval battle with the French in the Solent.
