Colston’s Heritage Song

Song created by Duncan Brett and his Year 5 class at Cotham Gardens Primary School.

Year 5's song
Redland Grove, 28th December 1938, Bristol Archives 43207/9/5/206

Did you know there used to be trams just down the hill?

Until a German bomb made them still, forever

It fell in the Good Friday raids in World War Two

Churchill came to see the ruins the day after

Oh I can’t help but wonder to myself

What life would have been like if those bombs never fell

And trams still ran for us to catch

Can you imagine the clickety-clack of metal tracks

As we made our way to school

As we made our way to school

Lover’s Walk, 15th October 1917, Bristol Archives 43207/9/20/35

Did you know there used to be seats around the trees

All the way along Lover’s Walk how splendid

It must have been to sit with your friends after school

Lit by the afternoon sun so warming

Oh I can’t help but wonder why they did remove those seats from the trees

and put benches out instead

Imagine your back against the trunk

Bark so rough but oddly pleasant

The tree would be your companion

Just outside our school

Just outside our school
