Jettied Building

Jettying is a building technique used in medieval timber frame buildings in which an upper floor projects beyond the floor below. This has the advantage of increasing the available space in the building without obstructing the street.

In many narrow, medieval and Tudor town streets the buildings were so jettied that people leaning out of the window at the top of houses opposite each other could shake hands across the street.
