Pithay

The Pithay is a small road that runs from Wine Street down to Fairfax Street in central Bristol. The name comes from the French word puit that means well and hae which can mean hedge or wall or enclosure. The name refers to the well, later a pump, that was the public water supply from the medieval period until the nineteenth century on Wine Street at the top of Pithay (Veronica Smith (2002), Street Names of Bristol, 2nd edition).
