A second Corporation Act increased Bristol further following over 60 years of industrialisation and urban growth. The boundaries were significantly changed again, partly to allow for greater urban growth as the tram network pushed out into the suburbs. This expansion brought Horfield, Stapleton, Fishponds, St George and further parts of Bedminster including Knowle. The expansion also included Avonmouth as a satellite that had developed as a new port in the 1870s.
The population had increased to over 300,000 and the land area was now 20 sq miles, about half what it is today.
