The 1904 Corporation Act increased the city boundaries to include Shirehampton, physically linking Avonmouth to the city. This expansion included the majority of Westbury-on-Trym and the village itself.
This boundary extension northwards into Gloucestershire included more land that would be used for council house building during the mid-20th century to create places like Lockleaze and Southmead.
The population grew to about 330,000 and the land area became 28 sq miles.
